Divide nothing smaller than a 10-gallon, and prefer a 20-long or bigger. Every compartment needs its own gentle filtration, its own stable heat, an opaque barrier backed by dense planting on both faces, and a lid, because a betta who can see a rival will try to get to him and a divider is a low wall. How much floor does each compartment actually need?
The hobby answer is volume: 5 gallons per section, so a 10-gallon becomes two sections and a 20-gallon becomes four. That is the rule bettafish.org gives and it is the one you will see repeated everywhere.
The problem is that bettas do not use volume. They use floor. Seriously Fish sets its minimum for a single male as a base of 45 by 30 cm or equivalent, which is 1,350 cm² of floor, and says nothing about gallons. Run both rules against real tanks and they disagree sharply.

So the honest position is a range, not a number. A divided 10-gallon satisfies the volume convention and fails the footprint minimum by more than half. A 20-long split in two comes within about 14% of it and is the smallest tank we would actually recommend dividing. A 40-breeder split two or three ways is the first arrangement where every compartment stands on its own merits.
Which of those you accept is a judgment call, and this site is not going to pretend the disagreement does not exist. What it will say plainly: do not divide a 5-gallon. Half of five gallons is 2.5 gallons and roughly 320 cm² of floor, which is a container, not a tank.
Plan the compartments before you buy anything
Three measurements decide the build, and taking them badly is the most common reason a divider fails on day one.
Interior width at the rim and at the substrate. Glass tanks are not perfectly square and the plastic rim intrudes. A panel cut to the rim dimension can bind on the way down, bow the glass, or sit a few millimeters proud of the bottom. Measure both.
Intended waterline. Not the top of the tank. Bettas are labyrinth breathers and need surface air, and Seriously Fish is explicit that the tank should be well covered and not filled to the top so the fish retains access to a layer of humid air. Fix your waterline first, then cut the divider taller than it.
Number of sections. Two is the sane default. Three or more multiplies every problem on this page: more dead water, more heat gradients, more feeding stations, more sightlines. If you are running a fishroom that needs four males on one shelf, four separate small tanks are usually easier to service than one tank cut into four.
Should you build the divider or buy one?
Both are legitimate, and the tradeoff is time against fit.
Buy when your tank is a standard size. A pre-made panel cut for a standard 10-gallon and designed to wedge under the rim without suction cups is a fifteen-minute job with no cutting and no burrs to chase. Suction-cup mounts are the weak point on any divider; cups lose grip, and a betta finds the gap.
Build when the tank is an odd size, secondhand, or you want three sections. Plastic canvas mesh from a craft store costs a couple of dollars a sheet and cuts with scissors. Egg crate light diffuser handles wider spans but its half-inch cells are structural, not fish-safe, so it needs a fine mesh layer bonded to one face before it goes in the water. bettafish.org’s recommendation for finishing DIY edges is binder report splines slid over every cut side, which is cheap and removes the snag risk in one pass.

What matters here is the finishing: whatever you cut, run a bare finger along every edge before it enters the tank. One filter and heater, or two?
This is where divided tanks quietly go wrong, and the failure takes weeks to show up rather than hours.
A mesh divider passes water, so in principle one filter and one heater serve both sides. In practice a single hang-on-back or internal filter mounted on one side pulls turnover toward itself. The far compartment becomes the slow end: waste settles, nitrate creeps, and the water sits a degree or two cooler. You will not see that on day three. You will see it at week six as a fish on one side with clamped fins and a nitrate reading you cannot explain from the other side’s test.
Two arrangements hold up:
A sponge filter in each compartment. This is the default. Air-driven sponges are already the right filter for a betta because Seriously Fish calls for strong water movement to be avoided, with a gently turning air-powered sponge described as adequate. They cost a few dollars each, they filter and oxygenate their own compartment independently, and one air pump with a gang valve runs both. A shared center strip. Two mesh panels an inch or two apart, with the heater and filter living in the gap between them. Water exchanges through mesh into both compartments, neither fish can reach the equipment, and you buy one heater instead of two. It costs you a couple of inches of floor, which the table above says you probably cannot spare in a 10-gallon and can easily spare in a 40-breeder.
A fully solid divider removes the choice. No water crosses it, so each side is a standalone tank and needs its own heater and its own filtration sized as if the other side did not exist. Budget for the duplicate equipment before you buy the solid panel, not after.
Whatever you build, verify rather than assume. Put a thermometer in each compartment for the first week and read both. The Merck Veterinary Manual lists marked temperature changes among the predisposing factors for bacterial disease outbreaks, and a two-degree gradient across a divider is exactly the kind of thing that goes unmeasured, because the heater is right there and appears to be working. Wattage by tank size is in best heaters, and you size for the compartment, not the tank.

How do you kill the sightline?
By treating opacity and planting as two separate jobs, both mandatory.
The laboratory version of this is unambiguous. The 2022 Comparative Medicine husbandry review for Betta splendens describes placing opaque, white, nonreflective plastic dividers between tanks containing males to prevent aggressive display in response to neighboring fish. Note all three adjectives. Opaque, so nothing comes through. White, so it is not a mirror. Nonreflective, because a dark glossy panel under a bright fixture will show a betta his own reflection, and a fish flaring at himself is no better off than one flaring at a neighbor. That is also the same behavior people deliberately trigger with a mirror, which is fine for two minutes and corrosive for two months.
Note also what that colony does not do: it separates fish into different tanks and puts the barrier between them. A divided tank is a compromise on top of that arrangement, not a reproduction of it.
Then plant it. Tall stems, driftwood and floating cover packed against both faces so there is no clean window at any height, including the strip right down at the substrate where a fish sits when he is not swimming. Floating plants earn their place twice here, because they also shade the tank, which matters for the reasons in betta lighting. Species that work under a nano fixture are in best live plants.
Bettas jump over dividers
This is the failure that catches people who did everything else right, and it has two versions.
Over the top. A betta with a rival on the other side of a barrier has a reason to cross it that a betta in a plain tank does not. bettafish.org’s rule is to keep the water level a couple of inches lower than the tallest part of the divider, which is the right instinct: a divider that stops an inch below the surface is a ramp. Cut the panel tall, then fill low.
Out of the tank. The same low waterline that stops a crossing does not stop a jump out, and a divided tank has two fish taking that chance instead of one. Cover the tank. A glass lid or a fitted mesh screen top both work; what does not work is a hood with a wide cutout for a hang-on-back filter you removed six months ago. Check every opening a fish could pass through, including the corners where the lid meets the divider, which is a gap that only exists in divided tanks and is therefore the one nobody thinks to check.

The first two weeks
Quarantine first, always. Any design that is not solid on both faces shares water, so a parasite arriving on one side reaches the other. Run the full quarantine period on any new fish before he goes into a compartment, not after.
Introduce one at a time. Put the established fish in, let him settle for a day, then add the second. Both arriving simultaneously into an unfamiliar tank with a rival visible is the worst version of the introduction.
Feed both sides, deliberately. In an undivided tank you drop food and watch it get eaten. In a divided tank it is genuinely easy to feed one side twice and the other not at all, particularly if one fish is bolder. Feed each compartment separately and confirm each fish ate, which also happens to be the earliest signal you get that something is wrong; a betta going off his food is usually the first symptom, not the last.
Watch for three things. Continuous flaring at the divider rather than occasional. Refusal to eat. Fresh fin damage, particularly split or frayed edges that were not there yesterday. Horizontal stress stripes on either fish belong on the same list. Any of them persisting past the first week means the sightline is not dead or the compartment is too small, and the answer is a second tank, not another decoration.
The welfare argument, stated plainly
A divider solves a space problem. It does not solve a fish problem, and it is worth being clear about which one you have.
The case for it is real. Breeders need several males on hand at once. A fishroom shelf holds one 20-long where it will not hold two separate tanks with two stands, two lids and two cords. Somebody’s second betta arrived as a gift and the second tank is three weeks away. In all of those, a properly built divided tank is far better than the alternatives actually on the table.
The case against is also real, and this site holds it. Two bettas in one body of water are two fish who know the other is there. Even with an opaque panel and heavy planting they share vibration, they share water chemistry, and any lapse in the planting reopens the sightline. A tank mates decision made properly usually ends with one betta per tank, and nothing on this page changes that. The 2022 laboratory colony housed its males in separate tanks and put the opaque barrier between the tanks, which tells you what an institution optimizing for consistent, low-stress animals actually chose when cost was not the deciding factor.
So: if two tanks fit your space and budget, buy two tanks. If they genuinely do not, build the divided tank properly, use the largest footprint you can, and hold yourself to the two-week watch list above. What you should not do is divide a 5-gallon, run one filter at one end, skip the lid, and call it housing two fish.
